At the same time, financial conditions—as proxied by our index that summarizes financing costs faced by firms and households in housing, credit, and equity markets—have eased notably in the United States and euro area in recent quarters.
In Figure 1, we plot the average values of different financial stability indicators for inflation targeting and non-targeting economies.We see in Figure 1 that inflation targeting has helped central banks in controlling inflation (Abo-Zaid and Tuzemen, 2012, Batini and Laxton, 2007, Gonçalves and Salles, 2008, Lin and Ye, 2009, Mishkin and Schmidt-Hebbel, 2007).
